MUSIC & LYRICS:

BOOK:
Winnie Holzman, based on the books by Gregory Maguire

WICKED is one of the biggest smash hit musicals of recent years. A prequel to The Wizard Of Oz, it takes us on a journey back in time with the witches from the story. Roles are reversed, and it begs the question - "Are people born wicked, or is wickedness thrust upon them?" Wicked stands alone as a show, however there are many nods and references to various versions of The Wizard Of Oz, which should keep any fan happy!

The show was, unusually for Broadway, an instant success - with queues around the theatres even before the show opened. It is particularly popular with young theatre-goers and has brought musical theatre to the attention of a whole new legion of fans. It is hard to say exactly why the show is so successful even seven years later - certainly the characters in the show can be identified with on many levels, from the cheerful but self-centered Galinda to the misunderstood and brooding Elphaba. The show's marketing campaign also had a lot to do with the initial success, with constant interviews and television spots - creating almost a need for young people to see the show.

Wicked's central character of course is the Wicked Witch, named Elphaba by novelist Gregory Maguire. Nicknamed Elphie, she has been portrayed by many actresses who have become instant stars overnight. They include Eden Espinosa, Shoshana Bean, Rachel Tucker, Stephanie J. Block, Alexia Khadime, Julia Murney, Kerry Ellis and most famous of all, the creator of the role on Broadway and the West End, Idina Menzel.
