Deloris Van Cartier, a struggling showgirl in Las Vegas, dreams
of escaping the sleazy clubs she performs in and make the big
time. She visits her boyfriend and manager, but walks in just as
he shoots a man. He pursues her, but she escapes and takes
refuge at the police station. Eddie, a cop who has known her for
a long time, has an idea. Deloris should hide in the local convent -
with her history, nobody would even think of it.
Naturally, Deloris and the Mother Superior are horrified at the idea,
but it's for the best. She struggles with the life of a nun, and the
other nuns are fascinated by her, especially when she sneaks
out of the convent into a club! Meanwhile Eddie reminds himself
of how he still carries a torch for Deloris.
Deloris joins the nun's choir and is appalled at their lack of singing
talent. Frustrated with her, the Mother Superior suggests she takes
over leading the choir. Under Deloris' direction, the nuns soon
discover a voice they never knew they had. The next Sunday they
perform in church, but their performance is like nothing ever heard
there before! The Mother Superior is upset and feels Deloris'
created a scandal, but she cannot deny the fact that the music
brought in a crowd from the street.
