ACT ONE
The Narrator introduces us to four wishers. Jack wishes his cow
would give milk. Cinderella wishes to go to the King's Festival. The
Baker and his Wife long for a child. Red Riding Hood buys some
bread from the Baker and travels through the woods to see her
grandmother. The Baker's neighbor arrives to see them, she
is a Witch who years ago placed a curse on the family - they
will never have children. She is holding the Baker's sister
captive - her name is Rapunzel. She tells them they have
a chance to lift the curse if they bring her the cape as red as
blood, the slipper as pure as gold,
the cow as white as milk
and the hair as yellow as corn within three days.
He begins his journey into the woods. Meanwhile, Jack is journeying
to sell his cow and Cinderella to her mother's grave. She receives a
gown and gold slippers from her mother's spirit so she can attend
the festival. Red Riding Hood encounters a wolf who distracts her,
then unknown to her, runs off to devour her grandmother. In the
woods, the Baker has forgotten the list of items but help comes
when his wife arrives to assist. They encounter Jack and persuade
him to give them the cow in exchange for beans from the Witch's
garden. Spying Red Riding Hood, the Baker goes in pursuit of her
cape.
