Star of the basketball team Troy Bolton, and new girl in school
Gabriella Montez, find themselves singing karaoke together at a
party. The chemistry between them is obvious. They exchange
numbers. Later at school, they are given detention along with half
the class by drama teacher Ms. Darbus.
Finding out that she is a maths whiz, brainiac Taylor invites Gabriella
to join the school's scholastic team. Troy and his best friend Chad
miss basketball practice due to detention. Troy's father, the
basketball coach, is not happy. When he does get to practice, he
can't stop thinking about Gabriella.
Curious, Troy attends an audition for the school musical - but along
with Gabriella is too late. The musical's composer, Kelsi, shows
them a song she wrote and they sing. Hearing them, Ms. Darbus
invites them to callbacks. Sharpay Evans, self-appointed musical
star, is furious. Even her twin brother and co-star Ryan can't calm
her down. Matters are made worse when Gabriella accidently
spills her lunch over Sharpay's shirt. Chad is astounded when he
hears Troy will be in the school musical. Troy and Gabriella find a
romantic setting in the school's rooftop greenhouse.
Chad and Taylor devise a plan to make things normal again. Troy
is tricked into saying Gabriella is not important and is recorded.
When he tries to explain, Gabriella pulls out of the show.
