Official At The Musicals Review
'They don't make them like that anymore.' is a term often used
when referring to musical theatre. Well, Hairspray proves
that indeed they do - full to the brim with showstopping
musical numbers, larger than life characters and comic
one-liners. Michael Ball once again proves his versatiliy
as the fabulous Edna Turnblad. His Edna is more
womanly than Broadway's Harvey Fierstein and
thankfully less coy than John Travolta on the big screen.
Newcomer Leanne Jones owns the stage
as Tracy Turnblad and astounds the
audience with her powerhouse voice.
Ben James-Ellis as Link Larkin needs
more than a little help with his awkward
American accent but more than makes
up for it when it comes to his solo in
It Takes Two.
Head to the Shaftesbury Theatre
where the cast will lift your spirits even
higher than some of the amazing hairstyles
revealed to you in the show's breathless
closing scene!
