OFFICIAL "AT THE MUSICALS" REVIEW
This review refers to the 2009 UK Tour
Having seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the West End and on
Broadway, I was curious to see how the show would translate into a
smaller production. Although I missed the huge set pieces of the
previous production, the show proved you don't need them to have a
great time. Chitty still managed to float and fly beautifully, with the
mechanics hidden very effectively.
The cast were in fine voice, Darren Bennett made one of the best
Potts I have ever seen. As Truly Scrumptious, Rachel Stanley brought
a more mature look to the character, whilst appearing delightfully
eccentric herself. Edward Peel and Kim Ismay stood out as the
comic Baron and Baroness, but the character of the Childcatcher
had been inexpicably reduced to almost nothing.
The song Lovely, Lonely Man was re-instated but only served to
slow the action. Saying that, every other number was brilliantly done.
Be sure to see Chitty when she flies your way!
