Produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group, BOMBAY
DREAMS brought the magic of India to London's West End, and
then later to Broadway. The show ran for almost exactly two years at
the Apollo Victoria Theatre, taking over from another Andrew Lloyd
Webber show - Starlight Express. For BOMBAY DREAMS, the
theatre was transformed to its original state. Race tracks that ran
through the audience had been built for the previous show.
Significant changes were made for the Broadway production,
including the inclusion of new songs and the cutting of others.
The music was composed by A.R. Rahman, a composer
largely unknown in Britain, but with almost superstar
status in India for the many movie scores and songs
he had composed. He has since given us the scores for
the hit movies Slumdog Millionaire and Elizabeth: The
Golden Age.
The book was penned by British actress-comedian-writer
Meera Syal who is perhaps best known for her role as
Ummi
in seven series of The Kumars at Number 42.
More
recently she played Aunty Hayley in six episodes of
the
BBC's Beautiful People. She has also written several novels,
including Life Isn't All Ha Ha Hee Hee and Anita And Me.
