ON STAGE
Ethel Merman, Broadway megastar of the time,
appeared in Cole Porter's Call Me
Madam, which included songs such as
You're Just In Love and Mrs. Sally Adams.
Agnes De Mille staged another Cole Porter
musical, Out Of This World which ran for
157 performances.
Frank Loesser's Guys
And Dolls also premiered that year with a fabulous cast which
included Vivian Blaine and Stubby Kaye who would go on to
recreate their roles for the 1955 movie version. Leonard
Bernstein premiered his musical version of
J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan.
ON FILM
Howard Keel and Betty Hutton led an
all-star cast in Irving Berlin's Annie
Get Your Gun. Walt Disney premiered a
brand new fairytale Cinderella featuring
music by Paul J. Smith and Oliver Wallace.
Judy Garland starred in Summer Stock
alongside Gene Kelly. The Dancing
Years was tagged as "the wonder
musical of the year" and featured
music by theatrical legend Ivor Novello.
